HOW TO CONFIGURE THUNDERBIRD E-MAIL TO
ACCESS YOUR MAILBOX ON MINNESOTA MICRONET'S MAIL
SERVER |
Download Thunderbird if you don't already have it.

TO CONFIGURE A NEW ACCOUNT
|
- Double click on the Thunderbird icon.
- Pull down Tools, select Account Settings, then
click on Add Account.
- The New Account Setup screen should display. Make sure the
dot is next to Email account. Click Next.
- For Your Name:, enter any permutation of your real name that
you want to appear in e-mail messages. Examples are: Jane Doe; J.
Doe; Jane D.; J. Doe, Manager. It's up to you what is entered
here.
- For Email Address:, enter your e-mail address. Examples are:
janedoe@herdomain.com; janedoe@mm.com Click Next.
- Most users will put the dot next to POP. However, if you
prefer to use IMAP, put the dot next to IMAP.
- For Incoming Mail Server most users use POP and so will enter:
pop.mm.com
If you're using IMAP instead of POP, enter imap.mm.com
You'll probably want to leave the check next to Use Global
Inbox.
For Outgoing Mail Server, enter smtp.mm.com
Click Next.
- For Incoming User Name:, enter your 3 to 8 character username
or mailbox name (in all lower case).
For Outgoing User Name:, leave it blank (unless you have SMTP Authentication
enabled, then enter your username and password. You normally will not have SMTP
authentication enabled unless specifically told to do so.)
Click Next.
- For Account Name:, enter whatever word/s you will recognize as the
name for this account. Examples are: Jane's mm.com mail; pop.mm.com;
pop.mm.com e-mail. Click Next.
- When the Congratulations! screen displays, click
Finish.
Now you need to change the Outgoing Server Port Number and enable SMTP Authentication. Do this by:
- On the left-hand side of the screen, click once on the name of your e-mail account here.
Click on View Settings for this Account.
- On the LEFT-hand
side of that screen, click on Outgoing Server (SMTP), which appears near the bottom of the list.
- Click once on the outgoing server for here, then click the Edit button.
- In the field next to Port:, wipe out 25 and enter 587
- Under Security and Authentication, CHECK the box next to Use name and password.
- In the field next to User Name:, enter the 3 to 8 character username for your mailbox here.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.

IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM . . .

Make sure the POP, SMTP, account name and password are correct. To check
the settings:
pull down Tools, then select Account Settings. Click on
Server Settings on the left for the incoming mail server and
username. Or, from the main Thunderbird screen, on the right-hand side,
under Accounts, click on View settings for this account. Make sure
your account, listed on the left, is highlighted. Click on Server Settings
under your account.
Server Type: POP Mail Server
Server Name: pop.mm.com
Username: your 3 to 8 character username in all lower case
Check for new messages on startup and automatically check for messages are
also found here.
If any
changes are make, click OK.
If you can receive messages but can't send, make sure the settings for us are
correct. If your settings
are correct, and you're still having a problem reading/sending e-mail,
close out of
all applications and reboot your computer. Connect again and try your
mail again.
If you're accessing the Internet through another ISP, that
ISP's rules apply when sending mail. If the settings are correct for us, that ISP may require that you
use their smtp server settings.
If Thunderbird gets slow:
- Empty the Trash - pull down File, then select Empty Trash.
- Make sure other folders aren't overly full.
- You may need to compact folders - pull down File, then select Compact
Folders.

SYSTEM!

FREQUENTLY!! COMPUTER VIRUSES CAN BE ACQUIRED THROUGH OTHER MEANS THAN
E-MAIL.
